In October 2022, Hunt's Food Group made a monumental commitment: to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2035. As a family-owned and operated business, we understand the importance of investing in a sustainable future, ensuring our legacy thrives for generations to come.
Over the past few years, we've embarked on a bold journey towards our zero emissions goal. Our meticulous approach, ensuring every change supports long-term success without compromising service quality, has yielded impressive results. We're excited to announce that since the launch of our carbon reduction plan, Hunt's Food Group has managed to cut its carbon emissions by a staggering 56% compared to our 2019/20 baseline. This remarkable achievement, surpassing our initial projections, is a testament to the unwavering commitment and hard work of our team, who have fully embraced our vision for a greener future.
Key Initiatives Driving Our Net Zero Vision
Here are some of the impactful changes we've implemented to make our net zero dream a reality:
Solar Power Installation: We've installed solar panels that generate a whopping 1.7 million kWh annually, covering 25% of our annual energy usage.
Eco-Friendly Fleet: Our heavy goods vehicle fleet can run on HVO diesel, which burns significantly cleaner than regular diesel. We use HVO in conjunction with regular diesel, depending on cost, and we invested in new vehicle purchases featuring efficient Euro 6 engines.
Route Optimisation: With advanced route optimisation technology, we've reduced the miles driven by our delivery fleet.
Re-Wilding: We're re-wilding 15 acres of farmland, planting trees, hedges, and wildflower meadows to boost biodiversity.
Electric Vehicles: All company cars are now either electric or hybrid.
Upgraded Refrigeration: We've replaced old refrigeration equipment with newer, cleaner-running alternatives and eliminated energy-intensive blast freezing processes.
LED Lighting: Our facilities now use energy-efficient LED lighting with motion sensors.
Local Sourcing: Currently, 41% of our products come from suppliers within 50 miles of our head office, significantly reducing transport emissions.
B-Corp: The B Corp certification demonstrates our commitment to creating equal value for all stakeholders, including our colleagues, suppliers, customers, and communities.
Celebrating Our Progress
We're incredibly proud of our strides towards our net zero goal. These changes contribute to a healthier planet and ensure our mission's long-term success by integrating eco-friendly initiatives into our daily operations.
Our customers are also stepping up in this green revolution. According to our 2023 Customer Survey, a remarkable 75% of our customers are actively working to reduce their carbon footprint. This shared commitment to sustainability is heartening and reinforces our belief that we can make a meaningful difference together.
